Li-ion Tamer featured for participation in DNV-GL JDP

Li-ion Tamer’s participation in the joint development program (JDP) for increasing the safety of lithium-ion batteries in ships has been highlighted in articles published by Maritime Executive (see link here) and Green Car Congress (see link here) The JDP is hosted by DNV-GL and the effort includes

  • Flag states (Danish and Norwegian Maritime Authorities)
  • Research institutions (Norwegian Defense Research Establishment)
  • Lithium-ion battery suppliers (Corvus Energy and Plan B Energy Systems)
  • Propulsion and system technology provider (ABB and Rolls Royce)
  • Fire system manufacturers (FIFI4MARINE)
  • Li-ion off-gas monitor manufacturer (Li-ion Tamer)
  • Ship owners (Stena and Scandlines)
  • Ship builders (Damen)

The intention of the DNV-GL JDP program is to identify improvements, not only for the batteries, but for the systems, procedures, and approval processes.

By including key players in the li-ion marine market, the DNV-GL JDP will be able to create rules with industry input, allowing for increased safety of the systems as well as allowing lithium-ion batteries to be implemented on more ships.

We put a great deal of effort into ensuring the safety of these new alternative systems, but the cost of the present safety and approval methodology is cumbersome. This collaborative effort gives a chance for an even greater level of safety while also ensuring that these new and advanced technologies can be implemented to a greater extent
